What is achondroplasia?

Achondroplasia has an origin in a genetic mutation that affects the development of bones generating numerous medical, health and mobility complications for patients. People with achondroplasia have physical characteristics traditionally associated with a "burlesque" stereotype, which still persists in today's society and is the basis of the strong social stigmatization suffered by patients and families. The social stigma, in achondroplasia, is almost more difficult to endure than the physical disability, also severe.

Purpose of the prizes

The Awards exist to raise awareness in the society about the problem of people with achondroplasia, which affects one in 20,000 people and is a rare disease.

Jury

The jury will be constituted on the 9th March 2018. It will be presided by the president of the ALPE Achondroplasia Foundation, Dr. Philip Press and will be formed by representatives of the Foundation, as well as personalities and specialists in different fields (medical, social, educational, social media, etc.). For the Awards, the jury will take into account the importance of the work done by each candidate in favor of improving the quality of life of people with achondroplasia, the altruistic or solidarity motivation of their work, the degree of commitment to the collective and the social projection of their work. There is no monetary prize for the winners, who will receive the Foundation's distinctive logo as well as a work of art.
